You are to pick TWO of the following questions and respond to them using 10-12 sentences each.  THIS IS DUE FRIDAY, JANUARY 27th.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

A) Discuss the role of nature in Hiroshima. In what ways do naturally occurring events, such as the weather, affect the city in the wake of the atomic bomb?

B) Do you think Hersey favors some of the six characters, or presents some of them in a better light than others? Why or why not?

C) Discuss the role of family in Hiroshima. How do family ties relate to community ties in the book?

  1. B) I dont think Hersey really favored these 6 characters . I think he chose them totally at random . He might have come across these people in research . Or he might have went to visit the wreckage , and was pointed out to some survivors . For all we know , he could favor these people over others . But only because he finds their stories fascinating . Talking to other possible survivors could have been really hard . Because some might have not wanted to talk about something so drastic , when they just want to forget . But then again , some could have not been physically up to it .

    C) They roles of family in this book are very different . After the bomb dropping , many people lost their families . Many had nothing to go back to even if they did survive . At some point in the story , the different characters meet some type of way . Like the priest and Miss. Sasaki . They all lived around each other , or knew each other some type of way .

  2. I do not think that Hersey favored any of the characters in the story over others. He didn't put any of them in a better light than the others. It was all pretty neutral. He may have had different views of them personally but it did not show in the book. They all shared the same bad luck and tragedies as everyone else, they were just the luckier ones. If he were trying to make any of the characters seem better than other ones, he would have tried to make some look more heroic than others or something like that. He did not.

Nature played a small part in the book, usually just making things difficult for the people. The flooding river, fallen trees, stuff like that. The rain and rivers also become highly toxic making the much needed water nearly undrinkable. Nature was working against them most of the way. Overall though, nature didn't really do alot other than blow dust around and rain acid on them. Most of the damage was just caused by the bomb.

  3. B) I think John Hersey, the author of Hiroshima, did favor the 6 people. The reason is that some of the characters are connected either through marriage, spiritual, and occupation. The 6 People Chosen also all have an amazing way of saying they survived and what prevented them from being hit by the bomb shock waves. There could be many reasons for chosen that group of people. They all faced challenges through this devastating event in world history. Examples would be father Kelinsorge, him being hurt like he was he still went along helping others giving them hope or Ms. Nakamura being a single parent and surviving radiation poison and putting her kids in school. It seems as if the 6 characters had Miracle stories that john Hersey wanted to share. Also it seems as if he wanted to make a point about people actions toward others when disasters happen. The stories he told shows the reader when times got hard and all hope was lost it took the strong to continue on doing what was need.
    C) Family plays an important role in Hiroshima do to the fact many lost theirs. Throughout Hiroshima examples of family and community ties played a role. A Big family part was with Ms. Nakamura and her kids. Even though she was a widow with three kids she managed to keep them protected and put them through school after she was ill with radiation poisoning. Also Mr. & Mrs. Sasaki both survived the shockwaves. He was un harmed But a bookcase fell on her legs and she got exposed to radiation. Community plays apart because Father Kelinsorge Knows Mrs. Sasaki and he was said to give her hope and spiritual healing because she recovered from radiation. Family gives hope in peoples life so for those that had family members survive was a blessing in disguise

  4. B) I don't think Hersey favored any of the characters in his book. He presented them all in the same light. If he did prefer any of the characters, I think he made a smart choice by not showing it in his book. He showed each character struggle through the bomb and gave actual facts and accounts from the survivors. I think it would've been hard for him to give his personal opinion on the characters because he has to give real events/facts on what happened. However, he showed each character in the same light. Some survivors just did better things than others. Each character made their own choices on whether they would help themselves or others, and that is what portrays them as good/bad people in the readers' eyes. Hersey didn't alter any of the actual events to help anyone's image. Hersey kept all of his character on equal ground.

    C) For some of the characters in Hiroshima, family was extremely important. However, some people had no family, or lost their families entirely. The character who seed to care the most about her family was Mrs. Nakamura. From the very beginning of the book, her family was her priority. After the bombing, she made sure her children were safe an cared for. To other characters, family isn't as importan because they have none. Father Kleinsorge is an example of this. Kleinsorge however cares deeply about his community. While Mrs. Sasaki is in the hospital after the bombing, he makes the effort to visit her. This demonstrates his dedication to his community especially after the bombing.

  5. The role of family in Hiroshima is to be there for one another and help out and just be there when ever some thing goes wrong and just be there to show support and give them a shloder to lean on. Family ties relates to community ties in the book because family is suppose to be there for you no matter what you go though and in Hiroshima not a lot of families did that and it was a lot of the community working together to help one another and to make sure that everyone that was still alive got out okay and that they were some were safe or stable the community acts as one big family in this book. The weather was effected by the atomic bomb in a lot of ways the atomic bomb had smoke and ashes so thick in the air that you cant really see the sky and it started to rain after the atomic bomb went off and the rain didnt really help because the ashes and dust covered the ground and it masked every thing and every thing was so dark and the rain didn’t help because like it made every thing even messy and the atomic bomb had the sky dark and black for a while before it cleared and the darkness of the bomb affected the city because it destroyed a lot of the houses and it killed a lot of people.

  6. C ) Familyy Ties Relate Tew Thee Familyy Ties Indaa Book Bcos Theyy Are Completely Different Bcos A lot Ov Families Lost Each Other &+ Like It Was Sad Bcos Wenn Theyy Thought Theyy Lost All Their Family And Belongings Theyy Didn’t , Theyy Juc Didn’t Knoe It Was Around Dem . Like For Example Miss. Sasaki &+ Thee Preist .Theyy Thought Theyy Lost Eachother But Theyy Didn’t Bcos Theyy All Lived Near By One Another &+ Inn Different Points Ov Thee Book Thee Characters All Meet Bcos Either Theyy Knew Eachother Or Theyy Knew Some1 Else That Knew That Personn . Also While Ms.Sasaki Is In Thee Hospital After The Bombing , Hee Makes An Effort Tew See Hur . ( Kleinsorge ) Hee Rele Does Care About His Community .

  7. B.) I do not think that Hershey favored any of the six characters in the story. Nor do I think he presents them in a better light than others. He showed them all in the same light. He probably had his own views, opinions and thoughts of the characters but never really showed it in the novel. Each character made their own choices and they all shred the same tragedies but had different ways of handling them. Hershey did not alter any of the events in the novel to taint any of the characters images .

C.) The role of family in Hiroshima was an important topic in the novel. Mrs.Nakamura is a perfect example, for she seemed to care for her family the most. Her family was her main priority. However, to some others in the novel, family wasn't all that important because most characters lost their families. Exmaple, Kleinsorge has no family, though he is a caring man, and cares about his community deeply. Family gives hope and faith and plays a big role in this novel, for it shows a variety of examples of how it does.

  8. A)Nature really didn’t have a huge impact. Flooding of rivers, rain and trees falling wasn’t a huge damaging problem. Since the bomb was nuclear and caused radiation the water got contaminated. The water and resources that was there are harmful to those that twill consume it. The river flooding could be helpful for hiding under so radiation blast wouldn’t hit you directly but also swallowing the water could be harmful as well. The bomb did mainly all the damage. The weather only spread the chemicals and bad substance in the air. This caused people to have harmful un-breathable air do to the fact the atomic bomb were fatal.
    B) I Believe that hersey did favor the 6 characters. The reason I say he favored them is because e they all have a connection with each other. Father kleinsorge is connected to Ms. Sasaki because they believe him coming to the hospital help her get better. Ms. Nakamura Is Connected To The Sasaki Do To The fact They Were There for their Family. Mrs Nakamura Was Ill With radiation Poisoning but still managed to recover and put her kids through school. Therefore I believe He favored them because they story kind of ties together. I feell there was no coincidence in this book that some of the characters know eachother

  10. B) I don’t think the Author john Hersey favored any of the characters in this book I think that he favored their stories and how the miraculously survived. I think that the author wanted people to know what happened and that in a time of danger and catastrophe people can come together to survive. I don’t think the author would give his opinion on what the people did and what they should have done because he was not there and when a nuclear bomb goes you can never understand what those people went through unless you were there. By the author not picking favorites it made the book be one note so that you can’t really feel anything but sorrow. I think that was his major idea for this story even though miraculous things happened it was probably the worst thing in Japans history
    C) In this book family was very important to most of the characters. The character that cared most about her family was Mrs. Nakamura cared about her children a great deal any time the alarm went off she would get her children as far away as she could. But after the Atomic bomb went off she put their needs first and made sure they had what they needed and not what she needed. Mr.Tanimoto would have his wife and their son head to Ushida so that way if bombs were dropped during the night they would be safe. But for those like Father Kleinsorge they had no family all he had was his community when Mrs.Sasaki is in the hospital he come to visit her because to Father Kleinsorge his community is his family

  11. A)In the novel Hiroshima the weather effects the city in great amounts. In the book it is summer.Summers are hot and the sun is shining. The sun gives off Ultravoilet rays which is another form of heat or radiation. The atomic bomb is fulled with radiation that was let out when it blew up the city of Hiroshima. The city people that was caught the bomb. The after affect was that their skin turned red, then yellow and it would fall off afterwards. Then when night time came around they got cold even though it was hot and humid out. they would shiver and say that they where cold. Then they would just die. I think its because the bomb had the equalibrium in the body messed up.

B)I think that Hersey does not hold any of the characters in favor. They all seem to tell their story and their feelings in different emotions. The light that Hersey shows on each character might be different because they have a different perspective on the whole atomic bomb thing. They all have a different story to tell. So the light that is being shed on each of the characters is needed because their stories are different on the same event. I do not believe that he shed them in a diferent light because the book was based on facts. The only villian that there was, was the atmoic bomb. So the light could not be shed in any direction because of this novel is a novel of stories.

    A) Discuss the role of nature in Hiroshima. In what ways do naturally occurring events, such as the weather, affect the city in the wake of the atomic bomb?

I think nature plays a big role in Hiroshima. I think this because a lot of civilians illness or casualties has something to do with nature. With the blazing sun, the floods that are knocking down the rest of Hiroshima buildings, and etc. The sun causing civilians to faint, become delirious, and etc. And the floods that's washing up the dead victims that survived the Atomic Bomb. And knocking over buildings killing civilians. Buildings that survived the bombing.

    B) Do you think Hersey favors some of the six characters, or presents some of them in a better light than others? Why or why not?

At the moment, I'm confused on whether or not, if he's favoring some of the six characters. Or presents some of them in a better light than others. My opinion, I dislike John Hersey format of style of writing. Because he have one paragraph on someone or something then just transition to someone else or something different. For an example, John Hersey interviewing Mrs. Nakamura in one paragraph, and then just jump to Dr. Sasaki. And this part is what's really getting me frustrated. But I can't make my decision on whether he favors or not. Because of what you told us to stop on page 118. John Hersey starts to talk about Dr. Terfumi Sasaki and Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge and their accomplishments and achievements. And he uses more pages to tell you about them. They each have their own section. But all of the characters , it was just one paragraph. I am going to have to finish reading the rest of the book to answer your question. I'm still confused at the moment.

  13. A , Nature played a pretty important role in the novel. The flooding and fallen trees served as obstacles for victims trying to recover. Thunder following the explosion caused more feared, but could've been consided a warning or alarm. The dust cloud kinda contained the harmful molecules from the bomb but not enough to stop the people from getting sick. The dust also made it harder to see and navigate because it darkened the day. Flooding was another additive to the difficulty of moving to safety and the water being contaminated made it so you couldn't swim in it without getting poisoned. Fire breakouts made the catastophe harder to control. Brisk winds spread the fire, which burned down homes and facilities causing death numbers to increase rapidly. In all, the way nature reacted to the bombing worsened their conditions, making recovery and survivor much harder.
C , Family also plays a fairly important role in the novel. Many people lost their family during or following the explosion. This caused lots of victims to lose faith in both themselves, and their belief systems. For some people family was a priority, but lots of people lost their families and some seperated. Family ties also give readers a pit of sympathy and compassion for these victims. It's not everyday where people are moved by disasters such as this, but for most people WORLDWIDE family comes first and is most important. These ties give readers a taste of the pain and suffering these victims faced.

Community ties also hold importance in the novel. In my opinion, it shows innocence and how innocent these people were. Father Kleinsorge for example, cared for his community. The things he did for his community, and the compassion he displayed through his support of others was inspirational. It teaches a lesson, making ungrateful people possibly wanting to alter their thinking on life. People like him didn't deserve this. In both family and community relationships, the caretaking and survival of others were a priority of innocent people such as Kleinsorge and Mrs. Nakamura.

  16. The weather plays a huge role in the devastation of the city after the wake of the atomic bomb because the heavy wind spreads the fire from house to house to house. As well as the rain floods that flood the river destroy house even further passed the bombs destruction. Hersey does not purposely single out characters more than others. Hersey had to pick characters that were more appealing to the readers and that had more of a role in the book than others. As well he does single people out by putting them into a category such as he presents Dr. Sasaki as a saint and Miss Sasaki as most like Jesus for their acceptance of their suffering. Family in the book Hiroshima doesn’t really have a role in the book because it’s not just the main characters families that are killed it is as well other peoples families in the community.

  17. a)i think the nature in hiroshima played a major role in this book.when the bomb went off the radiation went in the air and made them sick.the floods and other stuff came and destroyed the rest of hiroshima buildings.many didnt survive during these harsh weathers.people survived when buildings hit on top of them.the dust cloud made people ill also in the book.there was lots of fire explosions/breakouts after the bomb.it was hard for people to survive expeccially the people the was already injured in like hospitals.also the radiation had contaminated the water so no one was able to drink it.it made it hard to get supplies that they need to survive afterwards.

c)i think family plays a good role in this book.without family people would give up on themselves.also it helped them get passed the pain and focus on helping there families.some people had lost faith in themselves but there families had helped them through.the community is basically a family and they try to help everbody out.when peoples family got killed some of them wanted to die too but theyt stayed strong.some people was alive but they were missing.famiies was the first thing that was important to people.
